With an opportunity to design a staircase for our own workshop, we decided to use it as a research project into how we could fabricate an extremely lightweight staircase within our current manufacturing capabilities. The stair was designed to minimise weight, welding and fabrication time by using ultra-thin CNC laser cut steel sheet, and weighs less than an equivalent timber staircase.
It is fabricated from 2mm thick perforated sheet and 6mm thick steel truss stringers. It is a stiff and light access stair for a factory environment while creating an elegant feature in a light-filled void.
The staircase won an Award for the “Most Innovative Project” in the IStructE South Eastern Regional Awards, 2019.
