Chris Wilkinson, founding director of Wilkinson Eyre, was asked in 2012 to design the architectural installation at London’s Royal Academy Courtyard for the Summer Exhibition. His response was a 12m-long sculpture based on a series of 11 wooden artist’s frames, supported on a timber structure & clad in polished stainless steel. The piece was entitled “From Landscape to Portrait”.
The sequential 90-degree twist of the frames from landscape (horizontal format) to portrait (vertical format) helps create a structure with a powerful sense of movement.
Cake Industries were responsible for the Design for manufacture, construction & installation. This sculpture was relocated to Canary Wharf after the Summer exhibition.
Media – timber frames, folded stainless steel cladding (polished and matt) with cantilevered pre-cast concrete benches.
