“This sculpture came about through a brief for a sculpture to suit the character of an Art Deco apartment in Paris. I looked at the design of the period and found that the ginkgo leaf was a motif that occurred often, and decided to use it as my inspiration for the piece. I liked the simplicity of the form, and the fragile quality of the leaf which I wanted to convey. I also wanted to imply movement, and for the whole to have a dynamism when seen from different viewpoints.
The effect of light on the work was important too, and after making numerous maquettes I decided on a form with three elements to be made in matt and polished stainless steel. The thickness of the steel needed to be kept to a minimum to achieve the right degree of delicacy.
With engineering advice from Alan Baxter Associates the piece was made beautifully by Cake Industries, incorporating the delicacy, lightness and reflective qualities I wanted to achieve.”
