Project undertaken by David Knight at Flint & Neill.
Greenwich Reach Swing Bridge is a 44m span cable-stayed footbridge over Deptford Creek that swings open to allow access for river traffic. The main span is supported from a single mast with a central stay plane. A short 8m backspan contains a 120 tonne counterweight to balance the structure. Two pairs of backstays support the tip of the mast laterally and longitudinally, and bridge opening swing is driven by four electrical motors on a slewing ring bearing. David Knight was lead designer and project manager for this project, carrying out structural engineering design and leading a design team containing architectural and mechanical engineering specialists.
The project won the Pedestrian Bridge category at the 2015 Structural Awards, and was commended in the 2015 Structural Steel Awards.
