Reading University Live Build 2024
Invited to collaborate with Architecture students from Reading University, Cake Industries assisted in bringing their ideas into reality through a two day ‘Live Build’. The temporary structure was exhibited at their end of year show and then taken down for material to be reused in future projects.
The winning student scheme was developed by the students and then refined to create a lightweight, modular design built using basic methods from cheap and readily available material.
Timber sourced from cut down scaffold boards was used to make the triangulated wall and roof trusses. A series of simple steel nodes was developed, with common fixings allowing for the structure to be constructed quickly with only hand tools. Simple steel pegs made from bent reinforcing bar were used to stake the lightweight structure to the ground and the entire structure assembled by the students over two days under the supervision of Cake Industries.
