Pace Gallery
Cake Industries were commissioned to work with Jamie Fobert Architects to fabricate this raw steel staircase for the new Pace Gallery in central London. The intention was to form a series of large planes from regular modules to make a strong vertical connection between the two floor levels.
The stair is fabricated from consecutively selected panels of raw mild steel, in a waxed finish, highlighting the subtle heat marks and colouring formed during the manufacturing process of the material.
From its concealed connections to the sandwich construction, carefully considered details run throughout this scheme as a result of a close collaboration between the architects, engineers, and our design and fabrication team.

The project was awarded a “Merit” award at the Structural Steel Design Awards 2022. The judges said: “The gallery’s feature staircase connects the basement and entry level, blending seamlessly into and contributing to the gallery spaces. The attention to detail in both design and manufacture have resulted in an exemplary and beautiful structure which embraces the steel manufacturing process from rolling mill to final welding.”
