Moorgate Hybrid Stair
Cake Industries were engaged to develop a design for this striking feature staircase at an early enough stage to assist the Architect and client to maximise the use of structural timber considerably reducing its embodied carbon.
Glulam beams replace the mild steel often used in modern structures of this type with LVL providing the material for treads & risers. This mass timber construction is fast and clean to manufacture and install using bespoke steel bolted connections. Careful consideration was given to component sizes at the design stage, due to restricted access via crane and a narrow 6th floor terrace in Moorgate, City of London.
The rounded corners of the landing, hung via bespoke steel supports, provided a significant challenge for our engineering team, transferring critical loads via curved steel sections to the glulam stringers. This was vital to allow the fluted, solid oak outer cladding and LED lit recessed oak handrails to flow from lower to upper flight achieving a soft aesthetic without compromising structural performance
