Landscape to Portrait
Wilkinson Eyre founding director Chris Wilkinson, designed the architectural installation at London’s Royal Academy Courtyard for the Summer Exhibition 2012. His sculpture based on a series of large wooden ‘picture frames’ supported over a mirror-polished stainless-steel structure was entitled “From Landscape to Portrait”.
The sequential rotation of the frames through 90-degrees from landscape at the front (horizontal format) to portrait (vertical format) creates a structure with a powerful sense of rotational movement. The nuances of these are reflected in the mirror polished steel surfaces, offset by the matt finished vertical side supporting the seating.
The folded, polished stainless steel skin supports a Plywood & timber frame with steel spigots connecting the substructure to eleven LVL timber frames. A series of precast lightweight concrete benches connect via cantilever brackets to the structure along the vertical side.

The sculpture was designed in modules to be transported to the RA courtyard and assembled via Hiab crane. With minimal intervention permitted (no ground anchorage) the structure was held down with temporary ballast placed within its frame. After the Summer exhibition, the sculpture was relocated to a semi-permanent location in Canary wharf
