Cake Engineering
With extensive experience in designing and delivering structural engineering designs, Cake Engineering offers structural engineering in a consultancy form for projects large and small. Led by David Knight, Cake Engineering has a particular expertise in the design and independent checking of bridge structures.
We provide a full structural engineering consultancy service for private or public clients, including structural design, specification and building control calculations. We have worked on projects as small as modifications to private residences
through to design and checking services for sculptures, highway structures and footbridges.
Cake Engineering was the NCE Bridge Consultant of the Year 2024.

Footbridges
- Feasibility studies, option development, concept design, detailed design and construction supervision for all forms of foot and cycle bridge in steel, timber or concrete.
- Vibration (pedestrian comfort and wind-induced) assessments of spans and masts.
- Design of cable stayed systems including erection sequencing and geometry control.
- Principal and General inspections.

Moving Bridges
- Buildability-led structural design for bascule, swing, rolling and other movable bridge types.
- Geometry development and tolerance control to ensure accurate fabrication and seamless integration with mechanical systems by others.
- Fabrication detailing, material selection and construction sequencing advice for efficient manufacture and installation

Highway Bridges
- Concept and feasibility design of all forms of highway structures from short to long span.
- Detailed design of short to medium span steel and concrete/steel composite structures, including fatigue design of steel box girders.

Substructure
- Detailed design of concrete substructures.

Design Review & Checking
- Design reviews or independent checking of designs, both at concept stage and as a full (category III or equivalent) detailed design check.

Fabrication
- Advice on fabrication processes and procedures, particularly for steel structures. Tender review services. Review of construction sequencing and programmes.

Modelling & Analysis
- Parametric 3D modelling in Rhino and Grasshopper of complex geometrical objects or constraints.
- 3D modelling in Solidworks to provide object based information rich models.
- Finite Element modelling including non-linear and time history based approaches to dynamic behaviour.

Sustainability
- Embodied carbon dioxide assessments of design projects, including upfront and lifecycle assessment and consultancy on its use as a design tool. Training and mentoring for developing an inhouse embodied carbon dioxide capability.
